Silkscarf Chardonnay 2018

Silkscarf Chardonnay 2018

Winery: $24.26

A number of years ago we came across Silkscarf winery on Bottleneck Drive in Summerland, BC. It was a tiny old house that had been converted into a small tasting room and wine shop, like many of the "garage wineries" in the Okanagan that were getting started. This one has always stood out to me with the love you can taste and feel in their wine.

I pulled this Chardonnay out in anticipation of #InternationalChardonnayDay On May 27 and was surprised that the 2018 was still on our wine rack! Usually their wines are consumed pretty quickly after we visit. I whipped up something simple but a little extra special as I was excited to have this #inmyglass tonight. And if you're one of those people that think they don't like Chardonnay (I know there's a lot of you), don't knock it until you try it. Chardonnay styles range dramatically from tart, zesty unoaked versions to rich, buttery, coat your mouth in oak styles. You need to taste your way through it, try with different food and see just how versatile a varietal it can be. And I simply refuse to believe that you wouldn't enjoy this one.

Pale lemon in the glass and crystal clear, this unoaked Chardonnay was medium+ bodied and had a pleasing minerality on the nose right off the bat. Very Chablis-esque. The bouquet continued with pear, bosc peach, Meyer lemon, white pineapple and fresh undertones without being green. The intensity of the bouquet signaled what we would like on the palate. The fruit was up front and intense - peach, pear, pineapple and ripe apple. The wet stone came through on the finish and was softened by trace notes of camembert cheese. Slightly off dry and incredible well balanced with acidity that danced in your mouth, the finish lingered and lingered and lingered....

We enjoyed with pumpkin seed crusted ling cod atop orange broth sautéed spring vegetables with mint. I'll share the recipe soon and link it here!

I'm going to need to get my hands on some of the 2020 vintage before you all buy it out!

Cheers!
