Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2020

A couple of years ago I was attending the Vancouver Wine Festival with some of the most amazing women I’ve met anywhere, and they happen to be in the wine industry. As we made our rounds trying hundred of incredible wines, we all took notice of the Astrolabe offering. They stood out in a sea of so many fantastic tastings.

So as the weather has taken a turn for the better and we are enjoying summer-like sunshine in mid-April, I was really in the mood for a Sauvignon Blanc and grabbed this one.

While this fits the profile of many Marlborough sauv blancs, it stands out with a distinct herbal characteristic that I don’t often get - Thai Basil. Even my husband, who loves wine but isn’t always the first to jump of with flavour descriptors, mentioned that he felt like it had unique asian inspired characteristics.

The wine is clear, light gold in colour and absolutely bursting with tropical fruit, citrus and herbal notes. Passions fruit, guava, pineapple, gooseberry and kiwi with elderflower, Thai Basil, bell pepper and a fresh ginger-like spice. Restrained acidity for the typicity in the region but it’s beautifully in balance with the dry, medium bodied profile.

It’s all the things you love about a traditional Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but amped up. This flavour profile was begging for Asian food and it happened to be #takeoutdaycanada so we ordered up from our favourite sushi restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed it with the wine. The pickled ginger and wasabi bring out the herbal heat in the wine and the mango roll and tropical fruit notes in the wine went hand in hand. Highly recommend.

Cheers!
